Time’s Charlotte Alter clarifies the “GOP War on Women”: It’s about abortion and more abortion

January 29, 2014

And you thought the “war on women” had something to do with jobs or economic and political opportunity!

Uh-uh, says Alter, responding to Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul’s statement to CNN’s Candy Crowley:

The whole thing with the War on Women, I sort of laughingly say, ‘yeah there might have been,’ but the women are winning it….I’ve seen the women in my family and how well they’re doing. My niece is in Cornell vet school and about 85% of the people in vet school are women.

Silly Rand! Our Charlotte sets him straight:

The fact that Rand Paul thinks the war on women is over means he had no idea what it was about in the first place. Nobody accused the Republican party of standing in the way of women going to veterinary school– women’s financial and educational advancements are propelled by social changes that aren’t being specifically debated on the Senate floor. The “War on Women” is about abortion rights and access to affordable contraception more than anything, and Paul is fighting against both of them.

Abortion! Thanks, Charlotte–that was really helpful.

And “affordable contraception.” That means “free” (that is, funded by us, the taxpayers) birth control for middle-class and upper-class women (poor women have had access to free birth control for more than 40 years under the federal Title X program).

Gee, there was this guy named Mike Huckabee who took a lot of flack for saying this:

Our party stands for the recognition of the equality of women and the capacity of women…That is not a war on them; it is a war for them. And if the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them a prescription each month for birth control, because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it.

Mike, meet your new friend Charlotte. Women really can’t control their libido or their reproductive system without help from the government! And if you disagree, you’re in a war against women!
