Amanda Marcotte: Abortion is so darned hilarious that there should be a sitcom about it
Abortion: a laugh and a half:
Abortion is actually a perfect topic for a half-hour comedy, because it touches on so many themes that comedy writers love to mine for the laughs: sex, relationships, the massive gulf between our best intentions and our actual life choices. That’s why comedy writers circle back to unintended pregnancy time and time again in hit movies like Knocked Up and Juno.
Uh, Amanda, in Knocked Up and Juno, the gals who got pregnant actually didn’t have abortions–remember?
And as for your favorite abortion-promoting rom-com, Obvious Child, it tanked.
Knocked Up grossed a total of $148.7 million, and Juno grossed $143.5 million. Although it is still early, Obvious Child is obviously not riding any sort of wave and has grossed a paltry $1.9 million. Apples to apples, Juno was an indie film, too, and by this point it had earned $26 million.
People like babies. They think they’re cute.
