1837: Mt. Holyoke College opens its doors as the first institution of higher learning in America to offer an Ivy League-level education to women, earning its title as the first of the elite “Seven Sisters.” According to Wikipedia, quoting a biography, foundress Mary Lyon “strove to maintain high academic standards: she set rigorous entrance exams and admitted ‘young ladies of an adult age, and mature character.'”

College motto: That our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace.

1971: After a long internal debate, Mt. Holyoke decides not to go coeducational as many of its fellow Seven Sisters did, but to remain single-sex to keep alive its 134-year-old tradition of being strictly open to women.

College motto: That our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace.

2014: Mount Holyoke jettisons those now-177 years of tradition of being strictly open to women and decides to admit men who were once women. Also women who were once men. Also “nonbinary” people who are part men and part women–or maybe neither.

College motto: That our daughters, ex-daughters who are now sons, ex-sons who are now daughters,  and assorted offspring who can’t figure out what they are may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace.

2015: Mt. Holyoke scraps its annual production of The Vagina Monologues because  “the show offers an extremely narrow perspective on what it means to be a woman…Gender is a wide and varied experience, one that cannot simply be reduced to biological or anatomical distinctions, and many of us who have participated in the show have grown increasingly uncomfortable presenting material that is inherently reductionist and exclusive.”

College motto: That our daughters, even if they don’t have uh, vaginas, may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace.

2018. Mt. Holyoke, responding to student protests, dumps a proposed new logo for the college featuring the “Venus’ mirror” female symbol on the ground that, as the College Fix puts it, the logo signals “too strongly that Mount Holyoke is for women.” A bulletin issued by the college declared that Mt. Holyoke is now a “gender-diverse women’s college.”

College motto: That our…do you think Mary Lyon is spinning in her grave or just doing a slow yaw?
